THE KERIKERI MISSION STATION

The station was established in 1819.

Here Maori invited visitors to live among them. (One of the first places where that happened!)

Here in Kerikeri are two of the oldest buildings of the country:

  • The Stone store and
  • Kemp House.

THE STONE STORE

KERIKERI: The Stone Store, built in 1832.

The stone store, Georgian-style, was a warehouse, but became later

  • a trading post,
  • a library,
  • a barracks,
  • a boy’s school and
  • a general store.

Today it is a gift shop. Above the shop is a museum.

KEMP HOUSE

KERIKERI: The Kemp House.

The country’s oldest building, completed in 1821-22, built by missionaries and Maori, also Georgian design.

ST JAMES CHURCH

KERIKERI: St James Church, where our daughter was married.

The church was opened in 1878 and extended in 1963. In 1968 the church was moved by a tornado.
